Introduction to Pottery course, 1st Sept - 20th October ( daytime and evenings available)
Introduction to Pottery Course
Our Introduction to Pottery course is back — and it’s the perfect place to start if you’ve always wanted to learn ceramics properly.
This beginner-friendly pottery course at Bella Jones Ceramics is designed for complete beginners and anyone who wants to build a solid foundation in clay. You don’t need any previous experience — just a willingness to get your hands dirty and learn.
Over the course, you’ll be guided through the core techniques used in pottery and ceramics, including hand-building, wheel throwing, surface decoration and glazing. Each week focuses on a different making method, so you’ll leave with a real understanding of how clay works What you’ll learn
During the course, you’ll be introduced to:
Pinching
Coiling
Slab building
Wheel throwing
Surface decoration
Coloured slips
Glazing
The basic ceramic process from wet clay to finished fired work
You’ll make a range of guided projects across the term, giving you the chance to try different techniques and understand what kind of making you enjoy most.
This is a practical, hands-on course taught in a working ceramics studio, so you’ll learn proper skills from the start — how to handle clay, how to build with intention, how to avoid common beginner mistakes, and how to start making work you’re genuinely proud of.
What’s included
Your course fee includes the materials and firings for the set projects we make during the course.
This includes clay, use of studio tools, coloured slips, glazes and the firing of your course pieces.
If you make additional pieces outside of the planned course projects, these may be charged separately for materials and firing. We’ll always let you know clearly so there are no surprises.
What to wear and bring
Pottery is messy, so please wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting clay on.
Clay usually washes out, but please don’t wear anything precious. Avoid long loose sleeves, as they can get in the way when working with wet clay, especially on the wheel.
Please also:
Wear closed-toe shoes
Tie back long hair
Keep nails short if possible
Remove rings, watches and bracelets before class
Bring an apron or towel if you’d like one
Bring a notebook if you like to write things down
You don’t need to bring any tools or materials. Everything you need for the class projects will be provided.
Missed classes
Please note that we are not able to offer make-up classes for missed sessions.
This is a structured course taught in a small group, with each week covering a different technique or stage of the making process. Because of this, missed classes cannot be transferred, refunded or made up at another time.
Please check the course dates carefully before booking.
