6-Week Throwing Course: 2 September – 7 October
6-Week Throwing Course
A focused 6-week pottery wheel course for beginners and improvers who want to build confidence, control and consistency on the wheel.
This course is designed around one essential form: the cylinder.
The cylinder is the foundation of throwing. Once you understand how to centre, open, pull up and shape a cylinder with control, you have the basis for mugs, vases, jugs, planters and many other thrown forms.
Rather than rushing through lots of different shapes, this course gives you the time and repetition needed to properly understand the wheel.
This is a skills-focused course, with finished pieces selected from week 4 onwards.
Across the six weeks, you’ll focus on:
centring clay
opening out evenly
pulling up walls
controlling height and width
improving wall thickness
refining shape and proportion
trimming selected pieces
For the first few weeks, the emphasis is on practice rather than keeping everything you make. You’ll be encouraged to cut through your pots, review the wall thickness and recycle the clay, so you can learn what is really happening inside the form.
From week 4 onwards, you’ll begin keeping your strongest pieces to keep and trim, ready for us to glaze for you.
This course is suitable for complete beginners, as well as students who have tried throwing before and would like more structured practice.
Class sizes are limited to 8 students, so everyone has space to work and time for individual guidance.
What’s included
The course fee includes materials and firings for up to 4 finished pieces made as part of the course.
Additional pieces may be kept, fired and glazed where possible, but these will be charged separately.
What to wear and bring
Please wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting clay on. Clay usually washes out, but pottery is messy, so please don’t wear anything precious.
Please also:
wear closed-toe shoes
tie back long hair
keep nails short if possible
remove rings, watches and bracelets before class
bring an apron or towel if you would like one
You do not need to bring any tools or materials.
Missed classes
Please note that missed classes cannot be refunded, transferred or made up at another time.
This is a structured course, and each week builds on the previous session, so please check the dates carefully before booking.

Finished pieces will need time to dry, be fired, glazed and fired again. We will let you know when your work is ready to collect.
Price: £250 per person
Duration: 6 weeks
Class size: Maximum 8 students
Level: Beginner / improver
Includes: Up to 4 finished pieces glazed in our white studio glaze
